“You did well!”, “Excellent Work”, “I am proud of you, my child”; these words of appreciation are integral to a child`s cognitive development. Praise nurtures your

child’s confidence and self-belief. Children love to be told how wonderful they are and what their parents, elders, mentors and peers think of them.

According to Michelle Macias, MD, an associate professor of pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston, “Children consider praise- a reward in itself, and praise is a way to help them learn which kind of behaviours are acceptable.”

Pay Attention to Little Things- Children thrive on attention as it makes them feel nurtured. Being a parent, always note the smallest effort made by your child and unfailing praise them for it.

Knowing the Right Amount to Praise

Too much of praising may lead the children to astray. When after repetitive instructions the child is not behaving or mending his way then the praising must stop. Rather the parent should try to make them understand that the wrong behaviour is no more acceptable and the child needs to rectify in order to further receive any appreciation.
